A Severe Case of Accidental Parenting

In two days time we will attempt some new tricks to finally get Jack sleeping soundly at night and independently during the day. He continues to wake Leona 5-6 times a night to eat and sometimes won't go back to sleep. During the day, he won't nap unless he's held or carried. Most naps occur while strapped to one of us in the Ergo.

Last weekend we tried an abbreviated version of a method another family utilized here to get their kid to sleep but it didn't solve Jack's problem and it only left us more tired. After Jack cried one night for a solid 45 minutes, Leona called it off. Perhaps it would be best to just stick it out for another month until after the move to Tansen?

In desperation, she consulted a pair of her closest friends for their wisdom and advice. We received another book recommendation. This of course was frustrating for me because neither of us could possibly have time for another book. I already have a list of books I was supposed to read for our orientation that I've shelved to allow for more time for language study which is certainly limited due to the demands of the baby!

Fortunately some of what the book promoted made a lot of sense to me and Leona appears to be on board. I think we've finally found a middle-ground between the age-old philosophies that advise either never stripping the baby off you or abandoning the little guy in a dark room to cry himself unconscious.

Only time will tell if we've indeed become "a severe case of accidental parenting" and The Baby Whisperer knows best. The next few days may be pivotal.

For this reason, I decided to take the time tonight away from all the other things I should be doing to appeal to you for your prayers. Baby Jack affects everything we do and, though we would never choose to do any of it without him, we would appreciate it if he could do it a bit more soundly.

  1. UPDATE: After more than a week of crying and hand holding, I regrettably report that we gave up on this method of sleep training - at least for now. The three of us were exhausted last night when mama, amidst babies shrilling screams, called it off. It was good she did since we determined the following morning, this morning, that Jack was sick with a fever.

Please continue to pray on our behalf for the baby that refuses to sleep solo. This is something that we'll need to have figured out by the time mom starts work in the hospital.
